ANTANANARIVO – Local neighborhoods implement curfews

Nighttime movement restrictions are being enforced in several fokontany (neighborhoods) of Antananarivo due to a resurgence in insecurity.

Several neighborhoods in Antananarivo have regained a sense of nighttime tranquility following the introduction of curfews by local authorities. In Antohomadinika Sud, neighborhood chief Jimmy Christian Ravelomanana has posted notices prohibiting all movement between 10:00 PM and 4:00 AM.

Nearby, in 67 Ha Nord-Est, the measure is even stricter: movement is prohibited from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, according to neighborhood chief Malala R. “This measure has been in place since the start of the worrying disappearance cases,” the chief of Antohomadinika Sud stated yesterday.

This is not a general rule. The Antananarivo Police Prefecture has not issued an official curfew order. “This is an organization at the level of each fokontany to ensure security,” a source from the police prefecture noted.

However, even in the absence of an official curfew, informal movement restrictions are being applied in several neighborhoods. Police officers and members of community security committees patrol together at night and enforce the closure of bars at 9:00 PM. During these rounds, anyone unable to present a national identity card (CIN) is subject to checks. If their situation remains unclear, they are held at the station until the next morning. Furthermore, from 11:00 PM, authorities encourage night owls to return home.

The National Police have been instructed to listen to the local population by increasing field operations. Neighborhood chiefs report that these measures have already led to an improvement in security, with violent robberies decreasing significantly, and residents have expressed satisfaction with the reduction in nighttime noise pollution.
