REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH – Women at the heart of the discussions

The feminist movement Nifin’Akanga and its partners are deploying a program of activities that place sexual and reproductive health and rights at the center of debates this September. The movement intends to multiply opportunities for dialogue regarding women’s reproductive health, a subject that remains largely taboo in Madagascar.

“The Maputo Protocol has been gathering dust in a drawer since 2004. Meanwhile, Malagasy women and doctors continue to pay the price for a system that exposes them to legal prosecution rather than providing care. The month we are launching, involving everyone from jurists and religious leaders to students, shows that a broad and structured movement already exists in this field,” says Mbolatiana Raveloarimisa, coordinator and co-founder of Nifin’Akanga.

Jurists, religious leaders, students, citizens, and civil society organizations from various backgrounds and several countries are invited to a month of exchanges, training, and mobilization. Workshops, bootcamps, radio broadcasts, and film screenings, among others, will punctuate this campaign, which aims to break taboos surrounding women’s health while reaffirming the urgent need for access to safe abortion for all.

“Women represent the majority of the Malagasy population: their voice is an asset for the refoundation process. It is in this spirit that Nifin’Akanga and women’s advocacy organizations are joining this dynamic, by placing sexual and reproductive health issues at the heart of the exchanges,” continues Mbolatiana Raveloarimisa. The movement hopes to strengthen skills and collaborations among actors committed to women’s rights across the country.
