Amnesty International has called on Malian authorities to launch an independent investigation into alleged war crimes committed during an attack on a military convoy in northern Mali on July 18. The organization states that analyzed videos show the execution of Malian soldiers who were out of combat after being captured.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the NGO indicated it had examined twelve videos of the attack in Tabrichat, where at least 50 Malian soldiers were killed in an ambush claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), affiliated with Al-Qaeda, and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). This attack is among the deadliest suffered by the Malian army since the conflict began in 2012.
According to Amnesty International, some videos show soldiers with “hands behind their heads in a clear sign of surrender,” while others show “a group of men on the ground” being fired upon by armed men. The organization also asserts that prisoners were subjected to mistreatment, including beatings.
“We call on the Malian authorities to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into these war crimes committed by the FLA and the JNIM, who claimed responsibility for the attack,” Amnesty International stated.
Ousmane Diallo, a senior Sahel researcher at Amnesty International’s regional office, noted that “the soldiers were out of combat before being subjected to mistreatment and executed.” He reminded that captured combatants or those who have laid down their arms are protected under international humanitarian law.
On July 23, the United Nations had already requested an investigation into allegations of torture and murder committed during the same attack. The military convoy had departed from Anéfis toward Gao when it fell into the ambush. In the preceding weeks, Anéfis had been the site of violent clashes for control. The attack was jointly claimed by the JNIM and the FLA.
Since 2012, Mali has faced a security crisis marked by violence from jihadist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, Tuareg separatist movements, and community-based armed groups. Since the coups in 2020 and 2021, the country has been led by a military junta that had made restoring security one of its top priorities.
