Families affected by the Port Sec III project in Toamasina have not only received land titles for their new relocation site but have also been granted compensation of 10 million or 20 million Ariary, depending on the type of demolished housing. This first wave involves 63 households relocated to the Port Sec II site.
As previously announced, each beneficiary household was granted a 250 m² plot of land free of charge, with land titles officially handed over on Wednesday. Owners of concrete houses destroyed by the project received 20 million Ariary, while those with wooden houses received 10 million Ariary. According to authorities, these payments are intended to support the reconstruction of homes and the resettlement of families.
The handover of these documents is part of the relocation operations initiated to prepare the site for the future Toamasina Multimodal Logistics and Port Platform (PMLPT) in Tsarakofafa, Toamasina. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Transport and Meteorology, Herizo Andrianavalona Ramanambola, as well as local authorities and elected officials from the Atsinanana region.
According to the SPAT (Toamasina Autonomous Port Authority), this operation is part of an effort to reconcile the development of Toamasina’s port infrastructure with the rights of the populations affected by the project. The Director General of the SPAT, Anicet Heritiana Randriambahoaka, assured that former occupants not included in this first wave will receive the same compensation measures after their files are reviewed. He also noted that the one-stop shop remains open for affected households to submit their applications.
