“We are pleased to present Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach,” he stated during a press conference.
“This is ideally the pinnacle of my career, of my life, of my professional life. I will put all my strength into it,” emphasized the new manager of the Mannschaft.
Klopp also warned that if the press were to turn against him in the future, he would walk away: “If tomorrow you say: ‘he is crap,’ I am gone.”
Four days after the Mannschaft’s dismal elimination in the Round of 32 of the World Cup by Paraguay, German coach Julian Nagelsmann had resigned from his post.
Neuendorf traveled to New York with one of his vice-presidents, Hans-Joachim Watzke, for initial discussions with Klopp, which concluded with an agreement in principle.
However, Klopp had been under contract since early 2025 with Red Bull until the end of 2029 as the Global Head of Soccer for the Red Bull galaxy, the Austrian energy drink company that notably owns Leipzig and Salzburg, and holds shares in Paris FC.
The green light finally came from Red Bull boss Oliver Mintzlaff, who held a meeting with the DFB chiefs.
Klopp was released without a transfer fee, but in exchange for a simple donation of one million euros to Red Bull’s Wings for Life foundation, which is dedicated to spinal cord injury research, confirmed Bernd Neuendorf.
He added that Klopp will “completely end his duties (at Red Bull) to focus fully on the work within the Federation.”
At 59, Jürgen Klopp faces the greatest challenge of his coaching career, which has been marked so far by numerous successes on the benches of Dortmund (German champion in 2011 and 2012) and Liverpool (2019 Champions League winner, 2020 English champion).
A four-time world champion (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014), Germany has suffered three fiascos in the World Cup final stages, with two eliminations in the group stage in 2018 and 2022, and an exit in the Round of 32 this year.
Since losing the Euro 2016 semi-final against France, Germany has not reached the final four of a major tournament, an unprecedented decade of drought for a nation that is also a three-time European champion (1972, 1980, 1996).
