At 1:00 AM on the night of July 22 to 23, the cries of a newborn echoed in the maternity ward of the Miandrivazo hospital. A thirty-something independent candidate for the baccalaureate had just given birth to a baby boy. For many, this day would have marked a pause to fully embrace the arrival of a new child. But for the young mother, another appointment awaited her just a few hours later.
At 7:00 AM, barely six hours after giving birth, the young mother was already in her exam room at the Saint-Pierre private high school in Miandrivazo. She resumed her baccalaureate, determined to see through the journey she had begun long before her son’s birth. Between two life-changing events, she chose not to give up on her other dream: obtaining her first university diploma.
This scene was one of the highlights of the baccalaureate session at the Miandrivazo center. The young mother was able to resume Thursday’s exam thanks to special measures and the support of healthcare professionals.
According to the head of the Miandrivazo center, Célin Daudet Tovohery, all arrangements were made to ensure the candidate could take the exam in conditions compatible with her health. Healthcare professionals accompanied her throughout Thursday morning. Despite this exceptional situation, she was in good shape to continue the French exam.
Enrolled in the A2 series, the young mother chose Life and Earth Sciences (SVT) as her optional subject, which is why her session ended in the morning. “Her courage and determination impressed all the mobilized teams. It is a story that will remain etched in the memory of this session,” the center head confided. 831 candidates are registered for the 2026 baccalaureate in Miandrivazo, with about twenty absentees recorded.
