Claire Pierangelo has truly embraced Madagascar. The former United States Ambassador to Madagascar has just announced her appointment to the Board of Directors of Wildlife Madagascar, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of Malagasy biodiversity.
In a message announcing her arrival on the board, Claire Pierangelo stated that she was won over by the organization’s vision. The former American diplomat emphasized that she was “particularly impressed” by its approach, which combines environmental protection with the development of local communities.
According to her, this model helps reduce pressure on Madagascar’s globally significant forests and wildlife by preserving natural habitats while creating sustainable livelihoods and improving access to essential services for local populations.
A native of San Diego, she is now applying her extensive experience in intercultural engagement and international policy to the field of conservation. She also serves on the advisory board of Centre ValBio, the tropical environmental conservation institute of Stony Brook University in Madagascar, demonstrating her long-standing commitment to protecting the island.
Claire Pierangelo served as the U.S. Ambassador to Madagascar from June 2022 to April 2026. Her mission concluded as part of a broad realignment of U.S. foreign policy initiated by President Donald Trump. Like about thirty other American diplomats, including fifteen ambassadors stationed in Africa, she was recalled to Washington following a decision officially notified in December 2025.
Now a member of the Board of Directors of Wildlife Madagascar, Claire Pierangelo is leveraging her diplomatic experience, her knowledge of Malagasy realities, and her network to serve the preservation of Madagascar’s environment and biodiversity.
