A suspect has been placed in pre-trial detention following the murder of a child with albinism in Kiembe, Toliara, in May 2026. According to a video statement released by Public Prosecutor Narindra Rakotoniaina on Wednesday evening, the suspect is a foreigner operating in the mines of Ilakaka. The prosecutor stated that after appearing before the public prosecutor’s office on Tuesday, the accused was sent to the Tsiafahy High-Security Prison to await trial.
According to Narindra Rakotoniaina, investigations into criminal acts targeting people with albinism highlight a deeply rooted superstitious belief in certain regions. The magistrate explained, “According to this belief, using the organs of people with albinism is thought to bring prosperity and success in the exploitation of precious stones.”
The incident dates back to May 28, 2026. Around 2:00 AM, five individuals broke into the home of the parents of an 18-month-old child with albinism in Kiembe-Toliara. They abducted the young child before fleeing. Investigations by law enforcement led to the discovery of the child’s lifeless and decapitated body at the home of two of the suspects. This extremely violent crime sparked widespread indignation and strong emotion among the population.
