Which countries host the most workers from Madagascar? In which sectors are Malagasy migrant workers most active? How many leave each year? This information should soon be more easily accessible thanks to a unique labor migration database that the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Civil Service and the National Institute of Statistics (Instat) plan to implement. The two institutions signed a partnership agreement to this effect on Friday.
The future platform will centralize data on migrant worker flows, main destination countries, and the most affected sectors of activity. These indicators are intended to help anticipate skills needs, adapt training, and better regulate professional mobility.
Beyond tracking worker movements, this tool is also expected to strengthen the production of official statistics on labor migration. Both institutions aim to have regularly updated data to support the development of public policies, guide programs related to professional mobility, and meet Madagascar’s international commitments.
“This database constitutes a strategic tool for the State,” emphasizes the Director General of Labor, Rojomampionona Ravelomahatratra. Until now, information on Malagasy workers abroad was scattered and often limited to certain sectors, making it difficult to have an overview of labor migration.
According to the partnership concluded between the two institutions, the Ministry of Labor will be responsible for data collection, while Instat will ensure their processing, analysis, and the production of statistical indicators. “The ministry collects the data, while Instat processes them, analyzes them, and produces the statistical indicators,” explains the Director General of Instat, Eric Jean Michel Rakotomanana.
