Access to electricity is improving in underserved communities. Solar power is gaining ground and transforming lives. After four years of implementation, the joint Integrated Financing for Sustainable Energy (FIER) project is bearing fruit, sustainably changing the daily lives of the most vulnerable communities. It has enabled the connection of 550 families through two solar photovoltaic mini-grids, the deployment of 800 nano-grids benefiting 3,344 households, and the provision of individual solar kits to more than 16,200 households.
This was announced yesterday at the Novotel during the presentation ceremony for the results of this project, which was implemented jointly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). Within the framework of this project, a commitment of 1.86 million USD (approximately 7.8 billion ariary) helped mobilize more than 4 million USD (approximately 16.8 billion ariary) in investments for high-impact energy projects, thanks to the Derisking Facility.
The FIER project also supported 45 startups and SMEs through the Sustainable Energy Incubator (IED). Among them, 15 received a grant of 5,000 USD each (approximately 21 million ariary) to accelerate the deployment of their innovative solutions.
The project was launched in 2022 with the support of the Joint SDG Fund. It was designed to mobilize innovative financing, reduce investment risks, and stimulate entrepreneurship in the sustainable energy sector. The Minister of Energy and Hydrocarbons, Radonirina Lucas Rabearimanga, announced that the country will reach a historic milestone by the end of 2027, with an unprecedented scale of renewable energy production.
