HIGHER EDUCATION – The study of the Japanese language opens up new opportunities

The University of Antananarivo, through its Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences (FLSH) and the English-Japanese department, in partnership with the Sumitomo Corporation Antananarivo Office, hosted the “Japan Experience Sharing” event yesterday in Ambatobe, dedicated to sharing insights and experiences related to Japan.

The event brought together students, Japanese volunteers, and speakers with academic and professional backgrounds in Japan, aiming to foster cultural exchange and raise awareness about study and career opportunities in the country.

According to Solofoniaina Ambinintsoa Rakotomanana, head of the English-Japanese program and a research professor at the University of Antananarivo, Sumitomo Corporation has been supporting Japanese language education since 2016 through various initiatives, most notably the provision of scholarships. The goal is to strengthen ties by promoting academic and professional exchanges.

The program currently serves approximately forty students in their first year of the English-Japanese track and around twenty in the Malagasy-Japanese track. To date, about fifteen students graduate with a bachelor’s degree each year before moving on to further studies or entering the professional workforce.

“I received a one-year scholarship to study Japanese culture in 2020, and in 2022, I obtained another scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree,” shared Joseph Manarivo. As a holder of a Master’s degree in Japanese language, he emphasized the quality of the Japanese academic environment, the library facilities, and the value of cultural immersion. His ambition is to become a diplomat to help bridge the gap between Madagascar and Japan, two nations with much to share and learn from each other.
