The Ministry of Public Security is strengthening the ranks of the national police. To mark its 65th anniversary, the ministry launched two waves of recruitment for police trainees this year.
The first wave integrated five hundred student officers, who have been undergoing training at the National School of Police Inspectors and Agents (ENIAP) in Antsirabe since August 1st. The second wave, with its first round held on September 26th and 27th, targets the recruitment of twenty commissioners, thirty inspectors, and eight hundred and fifty police agents.
These recruitments address a glaring deficit. According to the ministry, Madagascar currently has one police officer for every three thousand inhabitants, which is far below international standards. This increase in personnel aims to bring the police closer to the population, while acknowledging that there is still a long way to go.
The reinforcement is not limited to personnel. Regional directors of Public Security have been installed in recent weeks, notably in the Boeny, Melaky, Betsiboka, Sofia, Diana, and Sava regions. Police stations and outposts have also been built or rehabilitated, equipped with vehicles, motorcycles, and IT equipment.
The year 2026 marks the inauguration of infrastructure built and rehabilitated to meet public expectations. The Ministry of Public Security has focused on equipping these facilities—including regional directorates, police stations, and outposts—with vehicles, motorcycles, and IT equipment to better serve the public. The existence of this infrastructure strengthens ties between the police and the community, prompting the Minister, Inspector General of Police Erick Michel, to urge that these sites serve as hubs for consultation and exchange to develop infallible strategies for ensuring security.
