TRIBUTE – Families celebrate Rak Roots on his birthday

Several generations of artists brought Rak Roots’ hits back to life during a tribute concert that mainly brought families together at the VIP Zone of Barea Mahamasina Stadium.

Families made up the majority of the audience who came to pay tribute to Rak Roots yesterday, on the birthday of the late singer. In a friendly atmosphere, the event felt like a family outing, where spectators could sit back, eat, and enjoy the show. White, chosen as the dress code, marked this gathering dedicated to memory and sharing.

On stage, several generations of artists took turns performing the singer’s iconic tracks. Ravel performed “Aza atao anio moa eh,” while Tsanta sang “Ahy,” and Ayam followed with “Ny hakantony” and “Manaiky aho.” Johane and Ravel also shared the stage for “My Lovely.”

Renowned artists took part in this tribute, such as Raboussa with “Ao fa Kely sisa,” as well as Bodo and Nate Tex with “Faka vady.” Artists from Rak Roots’ generation also revisited songs beloved by the public. Skaiz performed “Mpanjaka vavy,” Malm covered “Miaina aho,” Arione Joy sang “Ny foko lasany any,” and Tann Faya offered “Loatra.”

Born Loïc Rakotonirina, Rak Roots passed away at the age of 30 on the night of July 20 to 21, 2022, following an asthma attack while traveling to Mahajanga. His passing deeply affected his fans and the music industry.

Known for his romantic songs, notably “Faka vady” and “Ilay silako,” the singer left his mark on Malagasy variety music with compositions that continue to touch his audience. After his death, a wake was held in his honor at the Palais des Sports in Mahamasina before his burial in Antsirabe.

Through the covers of his songs, this tribute allowed families and fans to reconnect with a repertoire that spans generations and to celebrate the artist’s memory on his actual birthday.
