LITERATURE – Havatsa-Upem celebrates 74 years to the rhythm of books

Five days to celebrate literature, honor writers, and showcase their works: Havatsa-Upem will mark its 74th anniversary from October 27 to 31 at the National Library of Madagascar in Anosy.

Under the patronage of the Ministry of Communication and Culture, this celebration will bring together writers, poets, teachers, students, and literature enthusiasts for various activities. Books will take center stage, with presentations of works published by the association’s members.

The program will open on October 27 with an official ceremony, followed by a poetry recitation session. On October 28, works by members included in the school curriculum will be highlighted. The following day will be dedicated to the association’s collective works, while individual publications will be presented on October 30.

The celebration will conclude on October 31 with a friendly day centered around the ‘kabary’ (traditional Malagasy oratory). A tribute will also be paid to writer Harilala Ranjatohery, who is celebrating 50 years of literary commitment this year.

Through these five days, Havatsa-Upem aims to foster exchanges between generations of writers and pass on a passion for literature. This ambition is summarized in the motto of its 74th anniversary: ‘Velona ho velona ny haisoratra’, meaning ‘May literature live to bring life’.
