Posthumously, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Corps General Maminirina Ely Razafitombo, elevated Kira Michel, known as “Maître Kira,” to the rank of Grand Officer of the Malagasy National Order. The decoration was awarded yesterday morning during a tribute ceremony at the Barea Stadium in Mahamasina, prior to the transfer of his remains to his hometown of Toliara.
Nicknamed the “Malagasy Pelé,” Maître Kira passed away on Thursday at the age of 76. During his lifetime, he had repeatedly called for the State to honor former sports legends for their services to the nation while they were still alive, rather than waiting until after their passing. He reiterated this plea while battling cancer and struggling with the financial means for his treatment.
His remains were displayed at the Mahamasina gymnasium from Saturday until Sunday morning, before the decoration ceremony at Barea Stadium. Several of his former teammates, prominent figures in Malagasy football, came to offer their condolences to his family and pay their final respects. Among them on Saturday were Augustin “Baovola” Andriamiarinosy, Salomon Charlot Andriamady, René “Kely” Randriamifidy, and René “Tale” Rabearisoa. Abdou Bin Amidou was also present yesterday at Barea Stadium.
A final tribute ceremony is scheduled for this Monday at the Kianja Maître Kira in Andaboly, Toliara, before his burial.
