COOPERATION – Madagascar and China celebrate 40 years of partnership through SMATP

Forty years after its creation, the Sino-Malagasy Public Works Company (SMATP) remains one of the symbols of cooperation between Madagascar and China. Its anniversary was celebrated on Thursday in Antananarivo, coinciding with the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. This was an opportunity for the Malagasy state, which holds a 30% stake, to emphasize the importance of the company’s future.

Created within the framework of Sino-Malagasy cooperation, SMATP has participated in several infrastructure projects over its four decades of existence, notably on the RN1, RN43, and the Toamasina Maritime Avenue, recalled the Minister of Economy and Finance, Herinjatovo Ramiarison. He emphasized that the Malagasy authorities will ensure the improvement of SMATP’s management, the sanitization of its financial situation, and the strengthening of its skills. The goal is to enable it to continue contributing to the country’s infrastructure development, the ministry indicated.

The celebration of the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China was also an opportunity for the Chinese Ambassador to Madagascar, Ji Ping, to “take stock of the pragmatic cooperation and human and cultural exchanges between the two countries.” He also expressed the wish that this cooperation would continue and expand to “new levels.” General Ely Razafitombo, Minister of the Armed Forces and acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, echoed this sentiment and reaffirmed Madagascar’s desire to deepen its cooperation with China for the sake of development.
