Another seawater desalination project is under consideration. Madagascar has signed a partnership agreement with the Chinese company Jiangsu Bangtec Huachuang Sci-Tech Co., Ltd. to study the implementation of desalination units in the southern regions. The agreement focuses on conducting technical and economic feasibility studies for using desalination to produce drinking water, aiming to determine technical solutions tailored to the needs of the affected areas and assess their economic viability.
The work will examine the environmental and social dimensions of the project, as well as the conditions for implementation, financing, management, and maintenance of future facilities. The partnership was signed by the Minister of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, Minosoa Anjaratiana Elia Razafindrianiaina, with the Chinese firm, which specializes in water treatment and seawater desalination technologies.
“The development of water-related infrastructure is a priority for the Refoundation authorities,” stated Colonel Thierry Rampanarivo during the signing ceremony. He noted that these studies in the South are just the beginning and that the project is intended to expand across all of Madagascar. He also affirmed that Madagascar is open to collaborating with all private companies on water supply projects.
In August, Madagascar signed an agreement with another Chinese company to establish a seawater desalination plant in Tsiarangoty, Ambovombe. This plant is expected to produce up to 1,500 cubic meters of drinking water per day, serving over 75,000 people. Refoundation President Colonel Michaël Randrianirina previously stated in New York that the plant should be operational by January.
According to the Head of State, the installation of the Tsiarangoty plant will be funded by the company selected by the Malagasy government to exploit the bauxite reserves in Manantenina, as part of a compensation package that also includes the construction of a port in Manantenina.
