TOURISM – Madagascar Airlines schedules a special flight between Sainte-Marie and Reunion Island ahead of potential resumption of regular services

Madagascar Airlines has scheduled a special flight between Sainte-Marie and Reunion Island for October 3, 2026, three years after the suspension of this air route. This one-off service is intended to allow stakeholders from Sainte-Marie to attend an event in Saint-Paul, Reunion, while serving as a preliminary step toward the potential resumption of regular commercial flights.

The flight will connect Antananarivo to Sainte-Marie before continuing to Saint-Denis. On the return leg, the aircraft will operate the Saint-Denis–Sainte-Marie–Antananarivo route, according to information provided by the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts.

The October 3 flight is described as a first step toward restoring the service. Regular commercial flights could be scheduled starting in December 2026, subject to the finalization of the program and the necessary conditions for implementation.

For Sainte-Marie, the resumption of this connection is expected to facilitate travel to Reunion and support tourism and economic exchanges between the two islands. It also provides an additional access point to Sainte-Marie for travelers from Reunion.

The special flight is supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts, with the involvement of an operator based in Sainte-Marie. The actual resumption of regular services will depend on the program finalized for the end of 2026.

This initiative comes a few weeks after the announcement made by the President of the Refoundation during his visit to Sainte-Marie. He had mentioned conducting studies for the resumption of air links between Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands, including Reunion. The Sainte-Marie–Reunion route was suspended in 2023.
