ENERGY – Mananara seeks to utilize 1.5 MW surplus

The hybrid power plant has a production surplus of 1.5 MW, yet several rural areas in Mananara remain without electricity.

Officials in the Ambatosoa region are requesting support to establish a distribution network capable of delivering this power to surrounding communes. Due to a lack of transmission and distribution lines, a portion of the electricity produced cannot reach rural areas. Just a few kilometers from the regional capital, some localities remain in the dark, while others must rely on private providers for their electricity needs.

According to local officials, the price per kilowatt-hour charged by these private operators can reach 4,000 Ariary, compared to about 130 Ariary for the public tariff. This price gap increases user expenses and limits the use of electricity for economic activities. Consequently, the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons is being urged to build a distribution network, which would connect the hybrid plant to rural areas and utilize the currently available production.

This situation was highlighted during the working visit of the Vice-President of the National Assembly (VPAN) in charge of the Toamasina province, Razara Pierre Fidèle Ravolaza, to the Ambatosoa region. Local officials took the opportunity to present the challenges related to electricity access and request assistance.

In Mananara, the challenge lies in energy transmission; while the production capacity exists, the necessary network to distribute it to rural areas remains to be built.
