CINEMA – Laza Razanajatovo curates the program for the Rio Festival

Malagasy director and programmer Laza Razanajatovo is serving as the head of programming for the Encontro de Cinema Negro Zózimo Bulbul in Rio de Janeiro for the second consecutive year.

This marks a new milestone in cinematic exchanges between Madagascar and Brazil. Until September 25, Laza Razanajatovo is participating in the 19th edition of the Encontro de Cinema Negro Zózimo Bulbul, which is dedicated to Black cinema from Brazil, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Black diaspora. Created in 2007 by Brazilian actor and director Zózimo Bulbul (1937-2013), the event serves as a platform for distribution and networking for Black filmmakers.

For this 19th edition, Laza Razanajatovo has themed the program around the phrase “The earth does not lie,” borrowed from Senegalese filmmaker Safi Faye and her film Kaddu Beykat. Through this theme, the selected works explore topics such as territory, the body, family, memory, the right to exist, and the possibility of choosing one’s own place.

This participation is part of the ongoing collaboration developed over the years between the Rencontres du film court Madagasikara (RFC / Madagascourt Film Festival) and the Centro Afrocarioca de Cinema Zózimo Bulbul. In April, this cooperation enabled the presentation in Rio of films awarded at the RFC, including Zébu d’Orients by Hary Joël Rakotovelo and Anthon Kahn, as well as a film by Henriette Sena, which received a special mention.

In his editorial, the programmer also highlights various forms of resistance, which can manifest through nurturing, loving, listening, protecting, grieving, or transmitting. Black cinema is thus presented as a space where stories can be told from the perspective of those who live them.
