The large potholes that once riddled the road near the Sanfily taxi-brousse station are now a thing of the past. During the rainy season, stagnant water reaching hip-height had been a nightmare for road users and travelers, who were forced to wade through the water to reach their vehicles.
Sanfily serves as the main transport hub in Toliara, where Sprinter and Crafter minibuses, as well as taxi-brousse trucks known as “karandalana,” operate day and night to connect to the RN9 (North), RN10 (East-South), and RN7 (Central-East). This route is a critical artery, as it forms part of the RN7, which terminates one kilometer further at the Toliara Sea Garden.
Residents from the neighborhoods of Andabizy, Motombe, Ankilimarovahatse, Sanfily, and Andakoro rely on this route to reach the city center, take children to school, or commute to work. Cyclo-rickshaws and motorized tricycles previously struggled to navigate the massive potholes and “staircase”-like road damage, which frequently caused vehicles to overturn.
The Ministry of Public Works has rehabilitated 800 meters of this main road, which had long been in poor condition. “Rehabilitation work, spanning from PK 925+000 to PK 925+800, is progressing rapidly. A key feature of this new road is that it is being reconstructed with concrete,” the Ministry noted.
Drainage culverts have also been installed along the sides. The previous lack of infrastructure to channel water toward the sea had long contributed to severe flooding in this part of the city.
The rehabilitation is currently halfway complete. However, one lane, which meets the requirements for a concrete road, is now open to traffic. It had been closed to all passage, including pedestrians, for a month. Work continues with reinforcement installation, stretching from the roundabout to the Sanfily gendarmerie office, covering a section of Toliara’s most prominent avenue, “Monja Jaona” Avenue.
