Restitution. Thirty-seven archaeological artifacts dating back to the Pharaonic era were handed over to Egypt by Lebanon on Wednesday, six years after they were seized at the Port of Beirut during a smuggling attempt. The restitution was formalized during a ceremony held at the National Museum of Beirut, attended by the Lebanese Minister of Culture, Ghassan Salamé, and the Egyptian Ambassador to Lebanon, Alaa Moussa.
According to the Lebanese Minister of Culture, the 37 objects were seized in 2020 after arriving at the Port of Beirut from another Arab port. An investigation conducted following the seizure established that the items belonged to Egypt.
Five of the returned objects, including masks related to the Pharaonic civilization, were displayed to the public on Wednesday at the National Museum of Beirut. These items, made notably of fabric, were among those recovered.
