What do the transporters want? They have been provided with a new, clean, well-equipped, and organized bus station worthy of passengers, yet they refuse to leave the chaos of Fasan’ny Karana, claiming it is more convenient for both them and their clients. They are pulling every string to dissuade the Ministry of Transport from enforcing this decision. They argue that the Amoronankona station is too far from the city and inconvenient for travelers due to the scarcity of public transport on that route—an argument refuted by the Ministry of Transport, which has introduced shuttle services and increased the frequency of urban trains.
The fact is, in the early 2000s, these same bush-taxi operators did not complain when they were exiled to Fasan’ny Karana after leaving Anosibe following the market’s rehabilitation. Yet, at that time, there were not as many buses passing through that area. It was the existence of the station itself that attracted the transporters, along with all the small businesses surrounding it.
Fasan’ny Karana has thus become a symbol of anarchy, indiscipline, unsanitary conditions, all kinds of trafficking, and a kingdom for thieves—all reasons that necessitate its relocation, where touts will no longer be able to snatch luggage from unfortunate travelers.
Furthermore, the existence of the station has created an entire economy around it. Worse, permanent and completely illegal structures have been erected along the entire stretch of the dike intended to protect the capital from flooding. While the western part of the dike from the Anosizato bridge has been reinforced by the Produir project, the Fasan’ny Karana side is weakened by illegal constructions lining the station’s facade.
Relocating the station will undoubtedly put an end to the small businesses that flourish and swarm both inside and outside the terminal.
Politics has become involved to the point of pitting another ministry against the Ministry of Transport. Contradictory decisions have marred the issue. However, the Ministry of Transport has remained inflexible in the face of the rebellion orchestrated by self-proclaimed “defenders of user rights.” This is the same determination that officials in other departments or local authorities must show against the maneuvers of those who are dragging the Refoundation backward. It is pathetic.
