The implementation of the new curriculum is causing difficulties in public schools, with teachers expressing an urgent need for training.
The first week of the 2026-2027 school year is ending without a real start in public schools. Classes have not yet fully begun despite two or three sessions per subject. “We are lost in this new curriculum, which is extremely difficult. We don’t know where to start,” teachers from a General Education College (CEG) in the Antananarivo-city school district stated yesterday.
Mathematics teachers point to difficulties in the content of the new curriculum. “Probability, statistics, and geometric translation, which were taught in 9th grade and high school in the previous curriculum, have been introduced in the 6th-grade curriculum. Even we haven’t mastered them; how are we going to teach them to our students?” confided mathematics teachers from a public school.
A History and Geography teacher in a rural area expressed difficulty in finding documents adapted to the program’s content. “New lessons like climate change and renewable energy have been introduced in the Geography curriculum. I don’t have documents on these lessons. My biggest concern is that I am not connected to the Internet, I don’t have a suitable phone, and our school doesn’t have a connected computer either,” he indicated. Teachers also lament the shortage of teaching materials, noting that the provided booklets are insufficient for proper lesson preparation.
However, some teachers acknowledge that the new curriculum aligns with current realities and provides students with skills for modern professions, such as climate change, renewable energy, or tourism. “In French, for example, we cover the theme of tourism and expressions related to this sector. Thus, if French-speaking tourists visit a tourist village, students already have the necessary notions to interact with them,” explained a teacher of the subject.
Teachers are requesting training and additional documents. “Partners are ready to finance the training, which we are actively preparing,” reassured Yves Martin Razafimandranto, Director General of Pedagogy at the Ministry of National Education. He further specified that pedagogical guides have already been sent to public schools and that further distributions are forthcoming.
