3×3 Basketball: The Ankoay U23 Women Face a Global Challenge in Wuhan

The Madagascar U23 women’s national basketball team, the Ankoay, is heading to Wuhan, China, to compete against the world’s elite in the 3×3 format. They will participate in the 3×3 World Cup from September 15 to 19.

This participation marks a significant milestone for Malagasy basketball, which has been increasingly present on the international stage. Following recent successes in senior categories and the men’s 3×3 World Cup appearances, the U23 women are now ready to test their skills at the highest level.

Preparation is in full swing at the Palais des Sports in Mahamasina, Antananarivo. The six selected players—Koloina Rakotonirina, Chamirah Raharitiana, Elinah Rafarasoa, Karen Razafimahefa, Taratra Ramahatra, and Justine Étienne Rahariarivony—are training daily under the guidance of coach Eli Michael Rakotonindriana.

The coach emphasizes that daily sessions are crucial for building chemistry, physical conditioning, and tactical precision, which are vital in the fast-paced 3×3 game. While Madagascar enters the tournament ranked 20th among the participating nations, facing powerhouses like the United States, the Netherlands, and France, the team remains determined to prove that rankings do not dictate the outcome on the court.
