Following the renewal of its natural resource management transfer contract until 2031, Nosy Sakatia in Nosy Be is looking to reach a new milestone. From August 21 to 26, the local community group VOI RASIS visited two communities renowned for their expertise in natural resource management and community-based tourism.
A ten-member delegation, including representatives from VOI RASIS, local guides, fishermen, and technical coordinators from the GEC BATAN project, traveled to learn from the COBA Tantely community in Tsaranoro (Ambalavao) and the VOI Anja Miray (AMI) community in Anja (Matsiatra Ambony). The goal was to strengthen Sakatia’s capacity in ecotourism, local governance, and sustainable natural heritage development.
RASIS is now fully committed to the sustainable management of Sakatia’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems, including mangroves, forests, coral reefs, and sea turtle nesting beaches. The visit highlighted the success of Anja and Tsaranoro in participatory governance, transparent management, and reinvesting tourism revenue into local village infrastructure and development.
Project coordinator Hanta Rabetaliana noted that this initiative, funded by the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM), aims to promote solutions that align nature conservation with local economic development and community well-being, building on the foundations of the previous KOBABY project.
