The resumption of air links between Sainte-Marie and the Mascarene Islands is under study. During a meeting with various economic and social stakeholders in Sainte-Marie on Thursday, the president of the Refondation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, indicated that “the resumption of these links will be studied, just as it was done for the restoration of flights connecting Madagascar to the Comoros.” The restoration of direct flights to Reunion Island and Mauritius, which have been interrupted since the Covid-19 crisis, was one of the requests made by local economic operators.
The resumption of the Sainte-Marie – Reunion route had already been mentioned by the Minister of Transport and Meteorology a few weeks ago. The subject was raised by deputies during the question-and-answer session of the last ordinary session of the National Assembly. Minister Herizo Ramanambola Andrianavalona had even set December as the deadline for the implementation of this project.
Ravoraha Airport in Sainte-Marie already hosts a weekly flight to Reunion, but with a layover in Toamasina. The flight in question is operated by Ewa Air for Air Austral. In July 2022, the former President of the Republic promised the acquisition of a new aircraft by the national airline to connect Sainte-Marie directly to Reunion. In September 2022, a Council of Ministers had even announced two weekly flights between the two islands.
Regarding infrastructure, Ravoraha Airport in Sainte-Marie has already undergone rehabilitation as part of the Integrated Growth Poles (PIC) project and obtained its aerodrome certificate in 2023, confirming its compliance with international standards. Equipped with runway lighting since 2023, the airport is also capable of handling night flights.
