AMBOHIMALAZA CASE – Four defendants remain in detention

Four women remain incarcerated in connection with the Ambohimalaza case. They include Fenohasina, whose birthday was celebrated on June 14, 2025, her mother, her cousin, and a traditional healer. The wife of a footballer, who was initially detained with them, has been granted provisional release.

The Ministry of Justice emphasized that the Minister of Justice, Fanirisoa Ernaivo, maintains her position that the incident involved poisoning by a chemical toxin of the artificial botulism type, rather than belladonna or datura as previously suggested. However, she is allowing the judges to conduct the investigation with full independence. Scientific analyses that should have been carried out in Europe within three months of the deaths could not be performed, complicating the establishment of solid evidence.

Despite a confession from one of the defendants regarding the use of poison, magistrates are continuing their investigations to establish exact responsibilities. The case file is nearing completion and is expected to be transmitted to the Criminal Court for a public trial soon.
