The National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) and the Malagasy Red Cross have joined forces to address disasters. They signed a memorandum of understanding to consolidate collective dynamics in risk and disaster management in Madagascar.
The signing took place yesterday at the Hotel Panorama. This cooperation marks a proactive approach to recovery. “The cooperation will focus on disaster prevention and preparedness, emergency response, and post-disaster recovery. The goal is to save lives, reduce the impact of disasters, and strengthen community resilience,” stated the BNGRC. “Before crises, it will promote prevention, early warning, and community preparedness. After a shock, it will allow for a faster and better-coordinated response,” according to the Malagasy Red Cross.
This collaboration has reportedly already produced results. In the six months following Cyclone Gezani, 6,241 households, or approximately 30,000 people, were assisted. The Malagasy Red Cross has volunteers ready to intervene throughout Madagascar and at the level of each fokontany. This partnership comes at an opportune time, given the intensification of risks, cyclones, drought, and flooding.
