Gold miners using heavy machinery can now initiate a regularization process with the State. Starting this Monday, those wishing to comply with regulations can begin the procedure to conclude an agreement with the government, according to the Ministry of Mines. This initiative aims to regulate activities that have developed in several areas of the country outside the legal framework.
The proposed agreement must establish operating conditions and allow for the gradual integration of these activities into the regulatory system. The ministry specifies that the operators concerned must also commit to respecting a set of specifications, as well as obligations regarding social actions and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
This initiative comes as gold mining has continued despite the absence of mining permits being issued for over 16 years. In several areas, particularly where gold is extracted using heavy machinery, unauthorized activities have persisted despite control operations conducted by competent authorities.
Faced with this situation, authorities are now favoring an approach that combines regularization with strengthened oversight. Operators willing to comply with the rules can initiate the prescribed procedure, while activities that remain in violation will continue to be subject to regulatory measures.
The Ministry of Mines reiterates that inspections are ongoing. Operators who persist in voluntarily breaking the rules may face sanctions, including the withdrawal of authorizations and the seizure of equipment, it stated.
The need for reinforced oversight was highlighted in Mananjary, where a mission led last week by the Minister of Justice, in her capacity as ‘Coach’ along with the Mining Police, observed the continuation of activities that do not comply with current provisions. The mission is part of the authorities’ stated desire to establish a framework for collaboration with operators and local stakeholders.
Furthermore, the State intends to strengthen its control over gold mining, which is now considered a strategic resource. This classification is intended to allow for better monitoring of activities and increased intervention by authorities in the sector.
Through the proposed regularization, authorities seek to transition gold mining using heavy machinery toward a legal, organized, and controlled framework, while enhancing the economic and social benefits of exploiting this resource for the community.
