Rehabilitation of departments, modernization of infrastructure, and strengthening of reception capacity: the Soavinandriana Hospital Center (Cenhosoa) aims to mark its 135th anniversary with these modernization projects, with the ambition of becoming a reference hospital in the Indian Ocean. While the State is contributing to the renovations, partners are also being called upon to provide support. Various activities are scheduled throughout the year of celebration, which was officially launched on August 19 with an ecumenical service and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
Considered the first hospital created in Madagascar, Cenhosoa was inaugurated by Queen Ranavalona III on August 13, 1891. The institution has spanned both colonial and post-independence periods, changing its name several times before adopting its current title in 1993. On the occasion of its 135th anniversary, the establishment, which is under the supervision of the Ministry of Armed Forces, aims to accelerate its transformation through several projects.
The rehabilitation of the neurology and functional rehabilitation departments, the modernization of its helipad, and the creation of sports spaces are among the priorities. The installation of solar panels, already planned but awaiting funding, is also a key challenge. In addition to solar energy, a water storage system is being considered to secure the hospital’s needs.
These projects respond to the growing demand for consultations and hospitalizations at Cenhosoa. The facility has approximately 500 beds distributed across medical, surgical, intensive care, and specialized surgery departments. According to its Director General, Major General Willy Ratovondrainy, this capacity is no longer sufficient to meet demand. Thus, the 135th-anniversary celebrations serve as an opportunity to improve and expand infrastructure and patient care capabilities.
For his part, the High Councilor for Refoundation, Major General Physician Marcellin Zafitasondry, confirmed that Cenhosoa is the only facility in the country to perform cardiac surgery, including open-heart surgery, on children with malformations. The establishment also ensures medical and hospital care for civil servants and their families. The State will contribute to the planned rehabilitation projects, but an appeal has also been made to technical and financial partners to support these initiatives.
