The National Assembly has cited health imperatives to justify why the 59th Plenary Assembly of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum will not be held in Antananarivo on the scheduled dates. The event was initially set to take place from August 22 to 29 but had to be cancelled following “a decision emanating directly from the Prime Minister’s Office,” a source within the Lower House revealed.
An official correspondence from Mahazoarivo, reviewed by 2424.mg, further specifies that this move is “motivated by the need to comply with exceptional health and preventive measures implemented as part of the fight against risks related to the Ebola epidemic, in the exclusive interest of preserving the health of the Malagasy population.”
Although our source at Tsimbazaza mentioned the possibility of relocating the meeting to another member country at a date yet to be determined, the Prime Minister’s Office reaffirmed the Executive’s commitment to hosting this event on the Great Island. “The Government remains convinced of the importance of inter-parliamentary relations and attaches great interest to this meeting,” the letter states. “It therefore remains fully prepared to collaborate with the National Assembly to agree on a more favorable period for its organization at a later date,” Mahazoarivo concluded.
