From September 15 to 22, 2026, in Abidjan, the 22nd edition of the African Men’s Cadet (U18) Handball Championship will bring together fourteen African national teams. While Egypt stands out as the clear favorite, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco are also strong contenders for the podium. The draw has placed Madagascar in Group B, alongside Tunisia, Algeria, and Nigeria. This is a group that leaves little room for improvisation, and the primary goal will be to compete and reach a new milestone on the continental stage.
On paper, Egypt starts as the main favorite. The dominance of the Pharaohs in youth categories is the best indicator. During the last edition held in 2024, Egypt won its eighth youth title after a perfect run of six victories in six matches, defeating Tunisia (34-29) in the final.
Tunisia appears to be Egypt’s main rival. As the 2024 finalist, supported by a strong tradition in youth development, they are well-versed in the demands of high-level African handball. Algeria, also in Group B, is another nation to watch.
For Madagascar, the mission looks difficult but not impossible. Being in a group with two major powerhouses, Tunisia and Algeria, leaves little room for error. Nigeria, currently in preparation with a 23-player training camp in Abuja, will also be a serious opponent.
The young Malagasy players will need to rely on collective discipline, defense, and the ability to maintain the pace during decisive moments. A victory against Nigeria could be crucial in the race for qualification, while an upset against Algeria or Tunisia would completely change the situation.
While the podium seems out of reach for Madagascar, qualifying for the next phase would already be a significant achievement. In youth competitions, progress from one match to the next can often defy predictions. Abidjan will be an opportunity for Madagascar to measure its level, gain experience, and firmly establish its new generation among the African handball nations.
