A manhunt is underway in Antsiranana to locate four escaped convicts. Two prison guards were injured during the escape.
While performing labor duties at the Andaloasy penal camp in the commune of Sadjoavato, Antsiranana II district, four convicts escaped on Wednesday around 3:00 PM. During their flight, they attacked two prison guards with knives.
Alerted, the gendarmes of Sadjoavato and Ankarongana arrived at the scene to secure the area, assist the victims, and organize the search. The injured guards were taken to the Tanambao University Hospital Center in Antsiranana for treatment.
The guards attempted to prevent the escape, but the inmates, armed with knives, struck them before fleeing. They did not manage to seize the guards’ weapons. Prison authorities and the gendarmerie have mobilized the local fokonolona and surrounding communes to set up roadblocks and strengthen security checks.
Checkpoints have been established in Anivorano-Nord and Andrafiabe to monitor vehicles traveling toward Antsiranana and Ambilobe.
A wanted notice has been issued for each of the fugitives: Zolisy Rafanomezantsoa (22, sentenced for attempted burglary), Velonaina (30, sentenced for cattle rustling), Zafimanantsoa (24, sentenced for assault and battery), and Nihazomarina (27, sentenced for assault and bicycle theft). Detailed physical descriptions of the escapees have been released to the public.
