With only a few weeks left before the start of the school year, the state of certain public educational institutions is raising concerns. Both in Antananarivo and in more remote areas, schools are facing precarious conditions. Insufficient classrooms, limited lighting, and dilapidated roofs are among the problems identified.
In some classrooms, the lack of light is particularly noticeable. When natural light fades, students must continue their activities in poorly lit rooms. The shortage of classrooms also poses a challenge for some institutions as they prepare to welcome students in a few weeks.
The rainy season is another source of concern. Damaged roofs risk letting water in, making the classrooms damp. “Our classroom is not well-lit, and with the arrival of the rains, we fear that water will seep inside because of the roof,” a student testified.
These issues directly affect learning conditions. A poorly lit room or one exposed to water leaks can complicate the conduct of lessons. The lack of space adds another constraint for schools preparing for the return of students.
With a few weeks left before the start of the school year, there is still time to intervene. Repairing roofs, improving lighting, and ensuring sufficient classroom availability appear to be priority needs for the affected institutions.
The relevant ministry was contacted for details on the state of these schools and the measures planned before the start of the school year. No response had been received at the time of writing.
Preparations for the new school year are therefore also taking place within school buildings. In Antananarivo as elsewhere, their condition will determine the environment in which students and teachers return to the classroom.
