Reconfirmation. “The statements from the President of the Refoundation are clear: the twenty-four-month period will be respected, and the elections will be held around the month of July,” declared Thierry Rakotonarivo, President of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Ceni).
However, the specific type of election has not yet been clarified, whether it concerns a presidential election or another ballot. The July 2027 deadline remains maintained within the calendar established under the Refoundation roadmap.
This deadline was also reaffirmed by Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, Head of State, during his meeting with his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, on Sunday in Durban, South Africa. This new confirmation reflects the stated desire to respect the twenty-four-month period and to successfully organize the elections within the announced timeframe. The position taken by the authorities rules out, at this stage, the hypothesis of an extension of the transition period.
For the Ceni, the preparation of the ballot should not constitute an obstacle. The total overhaul of the electoral list is scheduled to be completed in April 2027. “The electoral list will be fully ready. There will therefore be no problem in organizing the elections in July,” assured Thierry Rakotonarivo. The electoral commission believes it has the necessary time to finalize preparatory operations before the announced deadline.
Political dialogue, however, remains relevant. Consultations conducted with officials and the various forces involved in the electoral process are intended to allow for discussions on the modalities of organizing the ballot, the electoral system, and the legal framework. “These consultations should allow for discussions on ways to improve the electoral process, the system that manages it, as well as the laws that govern it,” explained the President of the Ceni.
Finally, the Ceni calls on the forces involved in the elections to participate in the consultations and to formulate proposals to improve the electoral process. Political parties wishing to participate in the ballot are also invited to prepare their mobilization. “We call on the active forces involved in the elections to take part in the exchanges and to bring their proposals. Political forces planning to participate in the elections must also prepare for this deadline,” concluded Thierry Rakotonarivo.
