Heavy rainfall struck the Androy region last Thursday and Friday, causing flooding in the districts of Ambovombe, Beloha, and Tsihombe. Beyndrova Paubert, a local resident and regional director of Communication and Culture, described the event as unprecedented for the month of August.
In Ambovombe, the ‘Manara-Penitra’ stadium in Andaboly is completely submerged, with some residents even using it for laundry. Four days later, streets remain flooded, and local housing has suffered damage, forcing many to seek shelter in schools. The lack of drainage infrastructure has made it difficult for the water to recede.
The floods have caused significant losses, including the death of livestock such as zebu and small ruminants in Ambovombe, and the destruction of cassava fields in Beloha, threatening this year’s harvest. Minister of Livestock Tiana Randrianomenjanahary visited the area to assess the damage and promised support for affected farmers, including health monitoring for surviving animals.
Local officials note that these rains precede the ‘faosa’ season, a harsh dry period lasting about two months, followed by ‘asaramantigne’ in October. Experts warn that this unusual weather, potentially linked to the El Niño phenomenon, signals a risk of severe drought ahead, posing a major threat to food security in the region.
