EPIDEMIC – 106 measles cases and 108 positive malaria tests recorded in Ampasinambo since early September

The health situation remains under surveillance in Ampasinambo, in the Ifanadiana district. As of September 23, 106 cases of measles have been identified across eight fokontany, while 108 rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria have returned positive out of 179 performed since the start of the response on September 2.

Emergency intervention data also indicates 746 outpatient consultations recorded since the health response began. The rural commune of Ampasinambo, located approximately 145 km from Ifanadiana, is among the hard-to-reach areas targeted by this intervention.

The Ampasinambo fokontany accounts for the majority of measles cases, with 66 cases recorded as of September 23. It is followed by Ambodiara Nord with 13 cases and Sakavanana with 10 cases. Fiadanana and Morarano each have five cases, Ambalapaiso has three, while Ambodivongy and Ampasimbоla I each have two.

Malaria is the other major health concern in the commune. Since September 2, 186 fever cases have been recorded and 179 RDTs were performed, with 108 testing positive.

The report also notes 21 deaths, seven of which occurred at the health center and 14 within the community. These deaths are currently being monitored as part of the health response.

On September 23 alone, seven RDTs were performed with three positive results. One death was also recorded at the Basic Health Center (CSB).

Health teams and community agents are continuing surveillance, awareness, and care activities in the affected fokontany. A measles vaccination campaign is scheduled to begin in Fiadanana before expanding to other affected areas.

The distribution of treated mosquito nets, home visits, and patient care are also ongoing. In hard-to-reach areas, drones are being deployed to transport medicines and medical equipment.

Reported symptoms include fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and skin rashes. Health authorities recommend prompt consultation if symptoms appear and are continuing to strengthen teams and bring care structures closer to the population.
