D-Day. All taxi-brousse serving routes along the RN7 national road are expected to depart from the Amoronakona bus station starting this Wednesday. The Ministry of Transport and Meteorology is urging passengers to head to this new terminal for their departures. On Tuesday, Minister Herizo Ramanambola Andrianavalona reiterated that any vehicles departing from sites other than the designated station would be immediately impounded. “We do not want passengers to encounter problems along the way or find themselves in difficult or unfortunate situations,” he warned during a site visit to Amoronakona.
Although some transport operators continue to resist the relocation and held protests on Tuesday to challenge the ministerial decision, the Ministry of Transport remains firm.
The Minister emphasized that this is a state-level decision, not just one from his department. “The position remains unchanged, as previously announced. This decision does not solely concern the Ministry of Transport, but the State as a whole,” he told the press on Tuesday. According to him, “the goal is to provide better conditions for users, and everyone must get used to these new arrangements.”
While protesting transporters blocked the RN7 near the exit of the Analamanga region on Tuesday, the Minister visited the new bus station to oversee final preparations for receiving the taxi-brousse. “As of now, the Amoronakona bus station is open to allow us to avoid these road issues,” he announced. “We will make no concessions, and we are appealing to travelers,” he added.
The protest organized by transporters on Tuesday ended after law enforcement officers fired tear gas at demonstrators who had blocked the road at Ambatofotsy. One individual died following the protests. After being injured, he was evacuated to the emergency room but reportedly succumbed to his injuries before arriving at the hospital.
