A Malagasy national is now leading a UN organization in Côte d’Ivoire. After representing the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Madagascar since 2017, Volatiana Rakotondrazafy has assumed the same role in Côte d’Ivoire. She will serve as the organization’s representative, tasked with continuing the work initiated with the government, the private sector, and development partners.
For her initial engagement with Ivorian partners, she prioritized dialogue. On August 20, she convened the relevant stakeholders for a consultation session. During this meeting, she urged teams to better document their results to more easily convince financial partners and promote the replication of proven successful experiences.
Her professional background is closely linked to the agri-food and development sectors. Holding a degree in biochemistry, specializing in food science and nutrition from the University of Antananarivo, she furthered her education with studies in development at the Earth Institute of Columbia University.
She began her career in the agri-food industry, where she managed a yogurt and cream production plant for nine years at Tiko, a company founded by former President Marc Ravalomanana. She later transitioned to the development sector. For ten years, she worked with the World Bank’s Integrated Growth Poles (PIC) project, first as an agribusiness specialist and later as a senior executive. She notably participated in high-level dialogues with governments and development partners regarding investment and the empowerment of women and youth.
From the agri-food industry to international cooperation, Volatiana Rakotondrazafy has built a career at the intersection of several fields. She now continues this trajectory in Côte d’Ivoire, where she will be responsible for representing UNIDO and contributing to the country’s industrial development initiatives.
