More than seven million citizens have been provisionally registered on the electoral roll following two and a half months of census operations. The goal is to ensure a reliable and comprehensive electoral file ahead of the constitutional referendum and the presidential election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (Ceni) reported 7,163,714 adult citizens on the register, according to figures presented in Alarobia. Door-to-door visits by census agents in the fokontany remain the primary registration method, accounting for 93.23% of the total. Other methods, including direct registration at fokontany offices and online submissions, make up the remainder.
Gender distribution shows a slight female majority at 51.19%. Geographically, the Antananarivo province leads with 32.92% of national registrations. Ceni President Thierry Rakotonarivo emphasized that these figures remain provisional, noting challenges such as the lack of national identity cards or birth certificates among some citizens, as well as the absence of fokontany leaders in certain areas.
The overhaul is critical for the upcoming constitutional referendum and presidential election, which are expected to take place before the end of 2027. Head of State Colonel Michaël Randrianirina has set the goal of organizing “impeccable” elections to ensure the legitimacy of the next leader. The finalization of the electoral list is scheduled for the end of April 2027, with the electoral body expected to be ready for polls by July 2027.
