METEOROLOGY – WMO Director on a visit to Madagascar

Dr. Agnes Kijazi, the Regional Director for Africa of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), is currently visiting Madagascar. According to the Ministry of Transport and Meteorology, which hosted her at its headquarters in Anosy yesterday, Madagascar is among the few African countries to receive this visit.

The visit aims to evaluate the use of international standard equipment and infrastructure funded by the WMO, monitor the continuous training of meteorological services across the twenty-four regions, and explain “anticipatory actions” regarding climate change, so that sector officials, farmers, and the population can adapt their decisions accordingly.

“80% of the population relies on agriculture while the El Niño phenomenon is ongoing. Data from the General Directorate of Meteorology allows for the design of adaptation projects. Farmers must be informed of insufficient rainfall, seeds adapted to water deficits, and the strategy to follow in case of heavy rains. Hence the importance of strengthening cooperation with the WMO,” stated the Ministry’s Secretary General, Rija Franco Eddie Rakotoniaina, during the occasion.

As part of this cooperation with the WMO and a project for the Indian Ocean, numerous instruments will be installed at sea, on land, and at altitude. Madagascar is also expecting a radar, which it has been without for 20 years.
