“The implementation of rotating power cuts during peak evening hours is unavoidable.” According to an announcement from the state-owned utility company Jirama, several neighborhoods in Antananarivo and its surrounding areas will experience rotating power outages this evening. The company estimates that each outage will last approximately two hours.
The “terminal à combustible” (TAC 1) power plant in Ambohimanambola is currently facing technical difficulties, resulting in a power generation deficit within the Antananarivo interconnected grid. Furthermore, the situation is exacerbated by low water levels at the Andekaleka hydroelectric plant, which has further reduced production capacity.
Jirama estimates a shortfall of 20 megawatts, necessitating the implementation of these rotating blackouts. However, the state utility has pledged to make every effort to restore normal power generation and distribution in Antananarivo and its surrounding regions.
This marks at least the fourth time this August that the TAC 1 plant in Ambohimanambola has encountered technical issues.
