Aranta Slaughterhouse: Scales Lacking Compliance Stickers

In order to protect consumer rights and prevent fraud regarding the weight of goods, the Legal Metrology Service of the Boeny Regional Directorate of Commerce and Consumption inspected the weighing instruments at the Aranta slaughterhouse in Mahajanga on Wednesday morning at 5 a.m.

During this unannounced inspection, several of the eleven overhead rail scales were found to be non-compliant with requirements. “The stickers for some scales were not presented. Their presentation is mandatory for every weighing at the slaughterhouse. Cattle farmers must have them with them and not leave them at home. They certify that the scales are approved and meet standards. These instruments must also be suitable for the loads being weighed. After several checks in the main markets of Mahajanga this year, we are intervening at the slaughterhouse today,” stated the head of the service, Harijaona Jean-Marie.

The Legal Metrology Service (SML) inspects slaughterhouse scales to ensure the accuracy of commercial weighing and to protect both consumers and professionals. Its missions include the conservation and maintenance of national measurement standards, the traceability of which is ensured against international standards. It also inspects measuring instruments in accordance with current regulations and carries out their calibration at the request of industrial companies or other organizations.
