Following the investigation into the murder of young Larissa, four suspects have been arrested, sparking immediate unrest in the city of Ambositra.
The case has deeply shaken the community. The discovery of the 11-year-old girl’s decomposing body in a manure pit has caused widespread grief and outrage. Although the suspects were remanded in custody, the public’s anger led to the looting and burning of one suspect’s home. Tensions remained high late into the night, with local authorities and law enforcement working to restore order.
Larissa, who would have turned eleven this Monday, was kidnapped on April 30. Her parents received ransom demands for 30 million ariary, of which 4 million had been paid. Despite the payment, the police arrested four suspects. During the investigation, the suspects eventually revealed the location of the body in Fasimena, Ambositra district.
Following the discovery of the body on Wednesday, the community’s grief turned into violent protests on Thursday. A mob looted and burned the suspect’s house and shop. Security forces were forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowd. To prevent further violence, authorities transferred the four suspects to the prisons of Antanimora and Tsiafahy under heavy security.
