11,000 students in the Itasy region will benefit from nutritious school meals every day during the 2026-2027 school year. The meals will be prepared using products sourced from local communities, thanks to support provided to the World Food Programme (WFP) by the Lions Clubs International Foundation and World Food Program USA.
The project was launched at the Ambohitrinimanga Public Primary School in the commune of Ambatomirahavavy. It will cover 28 schools in the region, where students will receive meals prepared with ingredients purchased from local producers.
The project aims to improve children’s nutrition while providing new market opportunities for small-scale agricultural producers. The initiative is designed to align school requirements with the production available within local communities.
A new approach will also be tested as part of this partnership. Schools will be able to purchase food directly from producer organizations. The WFP will provide logistical support and handle the transportation of products to the schools, according to a joint statement from the project partners.
This pilot model is intended to strengthen the supply of local products to school canteens and create more regular market outlets for producers. It could also serve as a foundation for a more sustainable approach to school feeding in the affected areas.
