October 14, 1958, is a date that history almost erased forever. It marks the Republic Day, the day when General Jean Louis Marie Soucadeaux, High Commissioner and Governor of Madagascar since October 1953, announced the end of the 1896 annexation law of Madagascar by France. Senator Zafimahova subsequently proclaimed the birth of the Republic, while President Philibert Tsiranana announced that Madagascar was now a country. In the process, the Malagasy flag and the national anthem were chosen.
During the First Republic, October 14 was a national holiday as significant as Independence Day, marked by fairs and parades across the country. However, starting from the transition of General Ramanantsoa and throughout subsequent regimes, this date was removed from the calendar and the public memory.
Yet, it remains a historical date. At the time, the country was not ready for full independence, lacking professionals, infrastructure, and industries. The Republic was somewhat of a poisoned chalice, as the nation remained dependent on French cooperation and economic control. The revolution of May 1972 aimed for real independence, leading to the revision of cooperation agreements and the departure of French military forces from Diego-Suarez.
Ultimately, the country was neither truly independent nor officially dependent, losing its national identity in the process. We failed to leverage the privileges of a Republic, resulting in what can only be described as a ‘provisional liberty.’ Today, the guardianship has merely shifted; while France remains a partner, international donors now hold the reins.
From crisis to crisis, the economy has deteriorated and poverty has taken root, fueled by ignorance and widespread corruption that gangrenes every sector of life. Looking back, we realize what we have done with our independence. It remains a provisional liberty, and the final judgment will be irrevocable.
