Cases of missing persons continue to occur. This is a fact acknowledged by Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison in his response to the press yesterday at the Supreme Court.
“It is true that these facts persist,” said the Prime Minister on the sidelines of an event at the Anosy Supreme Court, addressing the wave of disappearances that has been unsettling citizens for several days. These words echo the growing public anxiety, as there is currently no official explanation for these events.
Yesterday, a young woman, a recent medical graduate, was found dead in the waters of the Andriamamovoka Falls in Ranomafana, having been reported missing since July 20. On Wednesday, the lifeless body of a 22-year-old student was recovered from the Ikopa River near Mahitsy, in the commune of Alasora, after being reported missing since July 15. In both cases, drowning and suicide are among the hypotheses being considered, as personal belongings were found intact.
Investigations are underway to uncover the truth. However, the public views these tragedies as part of a broader wave of disappearances that has been making headlines since late June. Despite government claims of political destabilization, a climate of psychosis prevails, leading to instances of mob justice based on rumors.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the State’s determination to end these crimes, promising “ruthless” sanctions against perpetrators. Following his July 7 declaration of a “war” on these crimes, an operational center was established at the Tsaralalàna central police station. Furthermore, the Council of Ministers has decided to restore the State Military Transmission Office (OTME) to enhance surveillance via CCTV cameras in the capital and has launched an anti-kidnapping Task Force under the Prime Minister’s Office.
While the government emphasizes the secrecy of ongoing investigations, the public continues to demand concrete results and transparency regarding their fundamental right to security. It remains to be seen whether the upcoming status report on the anti-disappearance efforts will be made public.
