The Polyclinique d’Ilafy has reduced the price of a radiotherapy session from 300,000 to 150,000 ariary. Announced on October 26, this measure accompanies the resumption of the oncoradiotherapy service after an eighteen-month interruption. The tumor scanner, usually billed at 300,000 ariary, as well as mammography and cervical cancer screening, are offered free of charge until November 15.
Cancer care represents a significant financial burden for patients and their families. Depending on the type of cancer and its progression, the treatment path may combine surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. The number of sessions varies from one patient to another. In addition to treatment costs, there are the costs of essential examinations for diagnosis and monitoring of the disease.
Beyond the measures announced as part of Pink October, the establishment is studying the implementation of social tariffs. “The cost of care is one of the main obstacles to patient management. Studies are underway to implement a social tariff,” says Nelly Raharin’ny Soa, interim administrator of the Polyclinique d’Ilafy.
The establishment is also looking for partners to facilitate access to treatments. Despite the reduction in the price of radiotherapy, the total cost of care may remain difficult to bear for patients who need multiple sessions.
The launch of the campaign on October 26 was also an opportunity to recall the importance of early detection of breast and cervical cancers. The associations present insisted on the need for moral and psychological support for patients and their loved ones. The difficulty in talking about cancer and the tendency to hide it can indeed increase the isolation of patients.
The resumption of radiotherapy expands the care offer of the Polyclinique d’Ilafy, while the free nature of certain examinations aims to encourage screening. However, sustainable access to care remains a challenge, particularly for patients whose management requires multiple treatments and prolonged follow-up.
