The NGO Saramba Initiative, an entity led by young women in Toliara, organized a five-day ‘bootcamp’ for young people. Twenty-five participants from Beheloke, Betioky, Ampanihy, Manja, and Toliara underwent intensive training in social and solidarity-based entrepreneurship. The training focused on direct practice; for instance, the participants slept in tents throughout the duration of the program in Madiorano, north of Toliara. They were then trained on how to identify project ideas and how to develop them.
The trainers and mentors came from the NGO and its partners, such as the company Raiky, which specializes in digital technology and youth entrepreneurship, as well as other local support entities. Eudoxie Beanjara, a consultant in local development and social entrepreneurship and founder of Vahatra Center, an entrepreneurial support hub in Antsiranana (Diana region), described having a wonderful experience with the youth.
“I had an exceptional stay with extraordinary young people who are changing the landscape in the Atsimo Andrefana region,” the mentor testified.
The project ideas developed by the twenty-five young people were all equally interesting and relevant. A pitch session was organized on the final day of the bootcamp in Madiorano. Antoine de Padoue, a young man from Ampanihy, aims to revive the mohair carpet industry of the region, which has been dormant for nearly twenty-five years following the disappearance of the ‘Angora’ goat species. Anjarasoa Norberhino wants to combat food insecurity among malnourished children in the Androy region by utilizing salt and organic spirulina in Faux-Cap. Aina Tavendrena seeks to add value to the fishery resources of Beheloke by processing them for sale along the RN7. Rosery Yolace is working to reduce screen time by developing a home library system based on a subscription model for books and newspapers.
First place was awarded to Lynda for her project ‘Fiantsara’, which involves grilling fish using coconut husks as a fuel source. “The idea is there, and I would certainly like to develop it with the support of the Saramba Initiative. I hope the necessary funds to launch my project will be raised,” she said.
